Piping / Equipment Arrangement Design
The importance of an experienced piping department cannot be overstated.
The overall efficiency of the de
sign and the constructability of the project
as well as the Client’s ability to safely operate and
maintain the facility are highly dependent on the equipment layouts and
piping plans initiated and produced by the Piping Department.
The Lead Piping Designers at QualEx have
an average of over 25 years experience enabling QualEx to
successfully provide cost effective designs to meet these important
requirements.
The Piping Department’s duties begin at the inception of the project by gathering field data and providing drafting services to support the Process Department in the generation of the project PFDs and P&IDs and their duties may continue through the construction phase to implementation and start-up. This department is central to the success of the project and the other engineering disciplines’ ability to successfully complete a project.
In addition to their layout and piping design duties, which includes the
creation of general arrangement drawings, piping plans, piping section and
detail drawings and piping isometric drawings, the piping designers are also
instrumental i
n: providing assistance to the other engineering disciplines;
reviewing vendor equipment drawings to insure nozzles, supports, etc. are
correctly located; generating material takeoffs that may be used to estimate
material and labor requirements for the project cost estimate and the
generation of material requisitions for piping, valves and specialty items;
generating piping control documents such as tie-in lists, isometric control
schedules and line lists; producing shop-fabricated and field construction
piping packages; and participating in constructability reviews. This group
may also be called upon to provide field assistance during the construction
and startup efforts.
Some of the software available to aid the piping design and increase the efficiency of piping design related tasks is as follows:
- AutoCAD (latest version)
- CADWorx Plant Professional (AutoCAD based) for 3D equipment, piping (w/ ISOGEN)
- Microstation (latest version)
- Intergraph PDS 3D (Microstation based) for 3D equipment & piping (w/ ISOGEN) modeling
